The wreck of the Royal Palm and the Ponce de Leon passenger trains occurred on December 23, 1926 during a driving rain storm. The Ponce de Leon was northbound and the Royal Palm was southbound. The northbound train was to take the siding, but due to a misunderstanding of orders, neither train took a siding and they then collided head on. 19 passengers were killed and more than 50 injured.
